The recent abduction of Alize van der Merwe and another victim has deeply affected the community.
The fear and uncertainty that followed were palpable. On 26 September 2024, we celebrated their safe return.
Read the initial projects of the kidnapping of Alize van der Merwe:
The initial project by Specialised Security Services, which was published on the day of the kidnapping of Alize van der Merwe, went Viral on social media, which led to an unprecedented amount of public and private security informants coming forward with information about kidnapping syndicates who operate in the Eastern Cape.
The Specialised Security Services kidnapping and cybercrimes task teams worked closely with high-ranking law enforcement officials to gather and investigate information pertaining to the kidnapping syndicates that operate in the Eastern Cape area.
On 25 September 2024, four suspects were killed in a shoot-out with police, while another was injured.
The incident took place at a house in Qoboqobo.
The SAPS recovered three unlicensed firearms with ammunition and two stolen vehicles were also recovered from the premises.
In a separate incident, a couple who is also linked to the kidnapping syndicate were arrested in Cradock while driving a stolen vehicle.
The couple was charged with possession of stolen property and kidnapping.
As a direct result of the pressure exerted by law enforcement, the kidnappers released Alize van der Merwe and another female victim on 26 September 2024.
No ransom was paid to the kidnappers, and the victims were returned unharmed.
More arrests and recoveries are expected soon.
In a public statement, speaking about the arrests, Eastern Cape police spokesperson Warrant Officer Majola Nkohli said a Provincial Task Team assigned to the kidnapping cases had managed to dismantle a kidnapping ring.
Provincial Commissioner Lieutenant General Nomthetheleli Mene, commended the team.
“This was a collaboration between the Hawks and other specialised units that worked tirelessly to ensure that at the end, we have positive results,” Mene said.
“We are indeed pleased with the outcomes, which we hope will deter those who want to embark on similar criminal activities in the future. We invested a lot of resources into this team, and the results are beginning to show.”
SSS would like to sincerely thank the Eastern Cape Task Team for their exceptional work and unwavering support
throughout this ordeal. Their coordinated efforts led to the identification of the kidnapping syndicate and the
successful recovery of the victims.
We would also like to thank the Crime Intelligence, Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation (Hawks), Provincial Tracing Team, Hostage Negotiators, National Intervention Unit, and the Tactical Response Team. Their bravery, skill, and dedication were instrumental in ensuring a successful outcome.
Furthermore, we commend the private security companies for their assistance, including providing information,
cooperating with law enforcement as needed, and providing assistance. Their support played a crucial role.
We acknowledge the invaluable contributions of the public, including local residents, the media, and businesses.
Your support was instrumental in keeping this case in the public eye and driving progress.
Our support goes out to the families of Alize and the other victim.
We pray for their continued healing and recovery.
