Youth Day is a celebration of the spirit of resistance shown by the young people of South Africa. It highlights the role of youth in shaping the country's history and the ongoing importance of empowering the younger generation to continue fighting for equality, education, and social justice.

It’s not only a day of remembrance but also a day to focus on issues affecting the youth of South Africa today, such as access to quality education, employment, health, and social development.

The role of the youth is very important as today’s youth will be tomorrow’s leaders, and in a country riddled with crime and corruption, it is up to the youth to determine the future of South Africa, and as with anything else, tomorrow’s outcome, starts with the choices made today.

Mr. Bolhuis was asked what advice he would give to the youth of today, and he responded with 5 important points of advice:

Remember the two ‘L’ words when it comes to the past: Learn from it, but don’t Live in it. It is important to look back at the past and learn important lessons from it, but the most dangerous and self-destructive thing you can do is to live in the past, and to allow the past to control your emotions, behavior and decisions.
Lead by example: We see too many generals and not enough soldiers in many aspects of life today. There are many movements that aim to better the lives of South Africans, the problem with many of these movements is that the leaders don’t practice what they preach. Therefor it is important to lead by example and show those around you how to live a better-quality life, and to make better decisions, instead of telling them, but not living it yourself.
Say it as it is: We live in a society where very few people are honest with one another, often using softer words to avoid conflict. But when you stand up for the right reasons, and you believe in what you stand for, you cannot afford to not say it as it is, people follow those who stand firmly in their beliefs, and who are willing to fight for their beliefs. In the same vein make sure you know what you are talking about when you decide to take a firm stand.
Surround yourself with the right people: If you hang around with four idiots, you will soon be regarded as the fifth. Choose your friendship circle wisely, and don’t attempt to change those who refuse to be changed.
Always put God first: No advice or action will be meaningful unless you put God first in every aspect of your life. Pray about everything before committing to anything. Live your life according to the will of God and encourage those around you to do the same by your actions and your behavior. If everyone on this planet was to practice this, all crime would fall away, and everyone would love their neighbor as they love themselves.

We may not live in a perfect world - crime, hate, poverty and corruption tend to get the better of humanity on most days, but it is important for the youth to know that change starts with you, it starts with small acts of kindness and honesty.
