GAS GEYSERS IN THE HOME: RISKS AND SAFETY REGULATIONS

Gas geysers are commonly used in South African households owing to their efficiency, but they pose serious dangers when installed or used incorrectly, particularly in poorly ventilated spaces.

The most significant risk is the release of carbon monoxide (CO) — a deadly, odourless gas.

Ongoing SSS Investigation:

  • On 28 February 2025, Zariskia Czövek (12) died at Makarios Lodge in Polokwane, where a gas geyser was installed by the guesthouse owner.

  • Zariskia went to shower around 22:00 and did not return.

  • Her mother later found her unresponsive on the bathroom floor.

  • It is suspected that she died from carbon monoxide inhalation caused by a defective gas installation.

  • The investigation continues with SSS working with the police.

CARBON MONOXIDE POISONING:

  • Poorly ventilated bathrooms or enclosed rooms can quickly fill with CO, leading to carbon monoxide poisoning.

  • CO binds to haemoglobin in the blood 200 times more strongly than oxygen, depriving vital organs of oxygen.

  • This can cause:

    • Unconsciousness.

    • Seizures.

    • Heart attacks.

    • Permanent brain damage.

    • Parkinson-like symptoms.

    • Death.

EXPLOSION AND FIRE HAZARDS:

  • A gas leak near a geyser can lead to an explosion if the gas ignites from a spark or open flame:

    • Leaks may occur due to old equipment, faulty piping, or a lack of maintenance.

    • Explosions not only cause injuries but can also destroy property and start house fires.

DANGERS OF DIY INSTALLATIONS:

  • Installing a gas geyser without the proper qualifications is extremely dangerous and illegal.

    • Incorrect installation can lead to leaks, poor heating, or fatal CO build-up.

    • By law, installations must comply with the South African Bureau of Standards (SABS) 10254.

    • The Pressure Equipment Regulations under the Occupational Health and Safety Act (85 of 1993) require every gas installation to have a Certificate of Conformity, issued only by a registered LPGAS installer.

  • If a geyser is installed without a valid certificate:

    • Insurance companies may reject claims if a fire or explosion occurs.

    • The homeowner can face legal action, including criminal liability, in the event of deaths or injuries.

ANOTHER CASE STUDY:

  • Karredouw Case:

    • In a landmark case, a 47-year-old guesthouse owner was convicted of double murder after a young couple, Ms. Mari Hoon (28) and her fiancé Mr. Jean Vosloo (25), died of CO poisoning due to a faulty gas geyser he had installed himself.

SAFETY RECOMMENDATIONS:

  • To reduce risk:

    • Avoid gas geysers in enclosed bathrooms or rooms with poor ventilation.

    • Consider electric or solar heaters as safer alternatives.

    • Install carbon monoxide detectors in homes where gas geysers are used.

    • Ensure regular inspections by a certified LPGAS installer.

    • Never attempt a DIY installation.

    • Confirm that your gas installation has a valid Certificate of Conformity to comply with the law and protect your insurance coverage.

Gas geysers, while efficient, carry deadly risks if not installed and maintained correctly.

Fatal CO poisoning incidents in South Africa highlight the urgent need for compliance with safety regulations.

SSS continues to investigate such cases to raise awareness and prevent further tragedies.
