SSS has long been engaged in exposing and addressing the actions of fraudsters such as Mr. John Ross Hunter.
On numerous occasions, SSS has warned the public about him
and others who exploit the trust of unsuspecting individuals.
These warnings highlight a persistent pattern: fraudsters thrive on deception,
manipulating people’s good faith for personal gain.
By repeatedly alerting the public, SSS aims to prevent further victimisation
and ensure that communities remain vigilant against such criminals.

THE CASE:
Our client came across an advertisement on Facebook Marketplace placed by Mr. John Ross Hunter, who was offering a Ford Capri for sale.
On 11 June 2025, our client paid R80,000.00 to Mr. Hunter for the purchase of the vehicle.
It was agreed that the Ford Capri would be delivered to our client.
Delivery never took place.
The delivery dates were continually postponed, excuses were repeatedly offered, and promises were made over and over without any results.
At one stage, Mr. Hunter offered to refund the R80,000.00 in full until the vehicle could be delivered.
Our client accepted this arrangement.
SSS is in possession of screenshots of messages sent by Mr. Hunter to our client, in which he confirmed upcoming payments as discussed and accepted.
Despite these assurances, no full payment was ever made and only more excuses followed.
Meanwhile, our client was misled into believing that the vehicle was still en route for delivery, at one point being told that the truck transporting the Ford Capri had broken down on the road.
When the scheduled refund did not materialise, Mr. Hunter claimed that he had "accidentally entered the wrong date."
He then forwarded a proof of payment of an upcoming transfer to substantiate his story.
With great difficulty, Mr. Hunter eventually made several partial payments to our client, amounting to R29,400.00, leaving an outstanding balance of R50,600.00.
Despite the difficulties, our client agreed to still take delivery of the vehicle and to re-pay Mr. Hunter the refunded monies upon delivery.
This arrangement also failed to materialise.
Further partial repayments of R23,550.00 were made in eight smaller transactions spread over five different dates.
Thereafter, only empty promises of future payments followed, none of which were honoured, leaving an outstanding amount of R27,050.00.
Our client has been left with no vehicle, no full refund, and has endured months of false assurances.

SSS warns the public against this scammer,
Mr. John Ross Hunter.
We request that other victims of Mr Hunter’s schemes come forward.
Anyone who has been a victim of Mr. John Ross Hunter should not hesitate to open a case against him at the SAPS.

In today's interconnected world of online shopping and virtual transactions,
it is crucial to exercise caution before making payments.
One of the most common pitfalls consumers face is paying for an item before actually receiving it.
Whether you are purchasing goods from an online marketplace or engaging in a private transaction,
the risk of falling victim to fraud or scams looms large. By paying upfront, you surrender control and leverage over the transaction, potentially exposing yourself to financial loss or receiving substandard or non-existent goods.
It is imperative to verify the legitimacy of sellers, utilise secure payment methods that offer buyer protection,
and always ensure clear communication and documented agreements before making payments.
Exercising vigilance and scepticism will safeguard you from regrettable transactions and financial setbacks.
