In past media interviews and community engagements, Mr. Mike Bolhuis of Specialised Security Services (SSS),

has consistently emphasised the critical role of collaboration in combating crime. He has underscored the importance of supporting the South African Police Service (SAPS), advocating for a unified effort between law enforcement,

private security agencies, and the public to enhance crime prevention.

While it is crucial to address challenges and shortcomings within the SAPS, it is equally important to acknowledge and commend the dedication, hard work, and successes of those officers who uphold justice and risk their lives to protect communities. Only through mutual respect, cooperation, and a shared commitment to safety can

we create a stronger and more effective crime-fighting network across South Africa.

KEY ACCOMPLISHMENTS:

LEADERSHIP AND CRIME REDUCTION INITIATIVES:

  • In May 2024, President Cyril Ramaphosa appointed Senzo Mchunu as the new Minister of Police.

  • Mchunu promptly outlined a comprehensive strategy to modernize policing and implement stringent measures to address the country's high crime rates.

  • By November 2024, these efforts yielded measurable results:

    • Murder rates decreased by 5.8%.

    • Sexual offences declined by 2.5%.

    • Robberies with aggravated circumstances reduced by 8.8%.

    • Rape incidents decreased by 3.1%.

  • These statistics reflect a positive trend in the nation's fight against violent crime.

COMBATTING THE "CONSTRUCTION MAFIA":

  • A significant challenge has been the rise of the so-called "Construction Mafia," groups engaging in extortion within the construction industry, leading to project delays and increased costs.

  • In November 2024, the SAPS, in collaboration with the Ministry of Public Works and Infrastructure, organised the "Summit on Crime-Free Construction Sites" in Durban.

  • At this summit, Minister Mchunu declared these extortionists as "Public Enemy Number One" and enlisted the Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation (Hawks) to dismantle these criminal networks.

RESCUE OPERATIONS AND HUMAN TRAFFICKING INTERVENTIONS:

  • In January 2025, the SAPS rescued 26 Ethiopian nationals from a suspected human trafficking operation in Johannesburg.

  • The victims had escaped captivity by breaking through a window and were found naked, indicating severe mistreatment.

  • Three suspects were arrested on charges of human trafficking and illegal possession of firearms, highlighting the SAPS's commitment to combating human trafficking and protecting vulnerable individuals.

ADDRESSING ILLEGAL MINING:

  • Illegal mining has posed significant challenges, leading to dangerous conditions and loss of life.

  • In late 2024, the SAPS launched "Operation Vala Umgodi" ("Close the Hole") to combat illegal mining activities.

  • This operation involved sealing off abandoned mine shafts and arresting illegal miners, known as "zama zamas."

  • While the operation faced criticism due to the humanitarian crisis it precipitated, with reports of miners trapped underground without supplies, the SAPS's efforts underscored the complexities of addressing illegal mining and the associated criminal activities.

ENHANCING TACTICAL RESPONSE CAPABILITIES:

  • The Special Task Force (STF), an elite unit within the SAPS, continues to handle high-risk operations beyond the scope of regular policing.

  • As of 2021-2022, the STF responded to 280 medium to high-risk incidents, showcasing their critical role in maintaining national security.

  • Notably, in 2023, the STF welcomed its first female member to complete the rigorous selection training program without any modifications, marking a significant milestone in promoting diversity within the unit.

ADVANCEMENTS IN FORENSIC CAPABILITIES:

  • The National Forensic DNA Database of South Africa (NFDD) has been instrumental in aiding law enforcement.

  • Established under the Criminal Law (Forensic Procedures) Amendment Act of 2013, the NFDD enables the SAPS to match DNA profiles from crime scenes with those of convicted offenders and suspects.

  • This tool has enhanced investigative processes, leading to more efficient identification and apprehension of criminals.

These achievements underscore the SAPS's dedication to evolving and adapting its strategies

to ensure the safety and security of South Africa's citizens.
