MURDER ACCUSED: MR. MARCO SCHALEKAMP
MURDER ACCUSED: MR. MARCO SCHALEKAMP

Specialised Security Services (SSS) has been appointed to act on behalf of Mr. Marco Schalekamp,

who is involved in the White River shooting incident.

THE CASE AGAINST MR. MARCO SCHALEKAMP: BACKGROUND AND ALLEGATIONS

  • On the early morning of 5 June 2025, a shooting occurred near the White River Rugby Club on Danie Joubert Street, in White River, Mpumalanga.

  • The incident resulted in the tragic death of Mr. Pieter Burger, the critical injury of Mr. Arno van Niekerk, and serious wounds to Mr. Marco Schalekamp, who has since been accused of premeditated murder and attempted murder.

  • According to reports, Mr. Schalekamp was found inside his vehicle—a bakkie—badly injured, with multiple gunshot wounds to his face, cheeks, neck, and shoulders.

  • Disturbingly, his young son and pet dog were also inside the vehicle during the shooting, though they were unharmed and later safely removed from the scene by a family friend.

  • The presence of a child at such a violent confrontation has added to the public shock surrounding the case.

  • The confrontation is alleged to have escalated outside the rugby club, culminating in fatal gunfire.

  • Mr. Pieter Burger died at the scene, while Mr. Arno van Niekerk sustained life-threatening injuries but survived after receiving urgent medical care.

  • The exact circumstances leading to the altercation remain under investigation, with witness statements and forensic evidence being central to the case.

  • Mr. Schalekamp was arrested shortly after the incident and formally charged.

  • As the charges fall under Schedule 6 offences in South African law, they are considered extremely serious, requiring the accused to provide compelling evidence to justify bail.

  • During his court appearances at the Witrivier Magistrate's Court, prosecutors argued that Mr. Schalekamp posed a flight risk owing to his connections to multiple residences, international travel, and alleged possession of multiple passports.

  • These factors, combined with the gravity of the charges, initially led to the denial of bail.

  • The case has drawn significant public attention because of its violent nature and the community’s strong interest in the White River area, where rugby and local social events are integral parts of town life.

  • As proceedings continue, the court will need to determine the exact sequence of events and Mr. Schalekamp’s role in the shooting.

  • BAIL GRANTED:

    • On 4 September 2025, Mr. Marco Schalekamp appeared before the Mpumalanga High Court in Nelspruit, where Judge Henk Roelofse granted him bail of R10,000.

    • Strict bail conditions were imposed for Mr. Schalekamp’s safety, including that he relocate to Pretoria within 10 hours of his release.

    • He is required to report to his nearest police station three times a week and surrender his passport to Investigating Officer Sergeant Mxolisi Keis.

  • DEFENCE STRATEGY:

    • Mr. Schalekamp's legal representative, Advocate Piet Pistorius, has challenged the State’s version of events, raising serious concerns about tampering with the crime scene and the credibility of witness statements.

    • SSS investigators share these concerns and have been questioning the State’s case since attending the court proceedings in White River on 8 July 2025.

  • SSS INVESTIGATION FINDINGS:

    • SSS has gathered extensive evidence regarding the case, which will be shared with the relevant authorities.

    • Our investigation has revealed serious procedural failures by the State, including incorrect handling of the crime scene and possible misdirection by certain witnesses.

    • Numerous individuals have contacted SSS with information supporting Mr. Schalekamp's innocence.

    • Each piece of information is thoroughly verified before disclosure.

    • The investigation remains ongoing, with additional evidence being actively pursued.

  • FAMILY AND SUPPORT NETWORK:

    • SSS maintains close contact with Mr. Schalenkamp's family and friends, ensuring they are updated and supported throughout the legal process.

  • ENGAGEMENT WITH AUTHORITIES:

    • Adjutant Officer Willie Pretorius, who is handling Mr. Schalekamp's shooting case, will be approached by SSS to share relevant findings and information.

  • CONCERNS ABOUT THE HOME SEARCH:

    • SSS has raised serious concerns regarding the police search at Mr. Schalekamp's residence, during which the SAPS claimed to have discovered illegal explosives and firearms.

    • Standard procedures were not followed, which included failing to officially book Mr. Schalekamp out for the search and not presenting a search warrant.

    • Witnesses confirm that no forensic photographers were present during the search, raising further questions about the validity of the evidence.

    • Based on these findings, SSS believes there were insufficient legal grounds for Mr. Schalekamp's arrest on these additional charges.

  • NEXT STEPS:

    • SSS will continue to work closely with Advocate Piet Pistorius to provide investigative support and ensure a strong defence.

    • Additional evidence will be collected and verified as the case progresses.

    • The goal is to ensure that justice is served correctly and that the truth of the incident is fully revealed.

Specialised Security Services remains fully committed to uncovering the truth, challenging procedural irregularities,

and ensuring that Mr. Marco Schalekamp receives a fair trial.
