A COORDINATED RESPONSE LEADING TO A SWIFT AND SAFE RESOLUTION:
On the evening of Wednesday, 26 August 2026, at approximately 19:30, Specialised Security Services (SSS)
was contacted by a friend of Dr. Joubert Steynberg to assist with a hijacking and kidnapping investigation
involving the doctor. Dr. Steynberg, a 41-year-old medical professional, had left his residence in Waterfall
and was last spoken to on his cell phone at approximately 18:57, while the hijacking was reportedly taking place.
He was driving a white BMW X3.
The SSS Kidnapping Task Team mobilised immediately, disseminating information about the victim
and the missing vehicle across first responder groups and SSS social media networks.
Through cellular location data obtained from Dr. Steynberg's phone, the investigation was directed to
Alexandra, Johannesburg—a dense urban area where swift, coordinated action would prove essential.
THE OPERATION UNFOLDS:
A multi-agency response was swiftly assembled, comprising numerous first-responder groups, South African Police Service (SAPS) units, and private security companies, all converging on Alexandra to pursue the lead.
Within a short period, an informant confirmed that the vehicle had been sighted in the area.
Dr. Steynberg's cell phone remained active during the initial stages of the investigation, allowing the SSS Cyber Unit to monitor it.
Concurrently, intelligence gathered from his bank account revealed that unauthorised withdrawals had been made in Alexandra, with further attempts made to use his bank card at various shebeens and filling stations.
At 21:15, Dr. Steynberg's cell phone was switched off, marking a critical juncture that intensified the urgency of the operation.
Nevertheless, the teams in Alexandra persisted, continuing their search based on the locations determined before the phone's deactivation.
A BREAKTHROUGH AND A SAFE RETURN:
At approximately 21:51, the investigating teams achieved a significant breakthrough: Dr. Steynberg's vehicle was recovered, along with two additional vehicles used by the suspects.
Minutes later, Dr. Steynberg contacted his wife from an unknown number, reporting that he had been released by his captors and was on his way home in a taxi, the driver having generously agreed to transport him to safety.
The relentless pressure exerted by the combined forces of law enforcement and private security left the suspects with no viable alternative but to release Dr. Steynberg in less than three hours from the time of the hijacking.
Further investigative work led to the arrest of two suspects shortly thereafter. They were detained at Sandton SAPS.
The investigation remains ongoing, and SSS continues to appeal to any person with information to come forward and share such information with the SSS Task Team, who will liaise with the relevant SAPS investigators.

Be vigilant at all times.
Be aware of your surroundings and any suspicious activity.
Maintain constant contact with family while travelling.
Act fast as soon as you realise a person has been kidnapped or hijacked.
Have the correct people on speed dial to assist in case of emergency.
This case demonstrates that through continuous pressure, visibility, and cooperation between communities,
law enforcement, and private security, positive outcomes are achievable even in the direst of circumstances.
