On 7 May 2025, Specialised Security Services published a project detailing complaints received
against a preschool in Bloemfontein named Kleuter Akademie.
Read the initial project here:

After the publication of the first project, the following media articles were published:
In some of the above media publications, the owner and principal of Kleuter Akademie, Mrs. Ria Niemand,
reacted to the facts published in the initial project by Specialised Security Services.
Several rumours and false statements have been circulating on social media as a result of the sensitive nature of the case,
this has led to misinformation and confusion.
Herewith the facts:
Mrs. Niemand was contacted by Specialised Security Services several times before a response was received.
When Mrs. Niemand could finally be reached, she was asked what would happen in the event that she needed to be contacted urgently by the school.
She responded by saying that a setting on her phone had been the cause of her inability to be contacted in the event of an emergency.
During a recorded conversation on 25 February 2025 with SSS Specialist Investigators, Mrs. Niemand admitted to several of the complaints that had been made against her school.
Mrs. Niemand admitted that a previous employee had been caught giving medicine to a child without the consent or knowledge of a parent.
Mrs. Niemand admitted to not doing thorough background screening on candidates before employing them, saying that she relies solely on previous work experience and references instead.
Mrs. Niemand admitted that her school was not duly registered, and she welcomed the assistance of SSS to assist her with the registration process.
Mrs. Niemand agreed to start the registration process under the guidance of SSS.
She admitted that she owes refunds to the parents who paid their school fees in advance, and that she intends on settling the payments.
When asked about the injuries obtained by a child in her care, Mrs. Niemand admitted to having knowledge of the situation and stated that it had already been resolved with the parents of the child.
Despite the assistance offered to her, on 22 April 2025, Mrs. Niemand contacted SSS investigators and informed them that she was not going to continue operating the school, and that it would be sold.
Thus, she did not deem it necessary to complete the registration of the school.
Mrs. Niemand also retracted her previous agreement to refund the parents, instead, she stated that the parents could follow the legal route and obtain their money by hiring attorneys.
It is possible that Mrs. Niemand is aware that the legal costs involved in pursuing such a claim would likely make it financially unfeasible for the parents to recover the money, hoping that they would ultimately accept this outcome.
After the first project and subsequent newspaper coverage, SSS received numerous complaints from individuals who confirmed the allegations against Mrs. Ria Niemand. These complaints were sent to SSS via email and WhatsApp. Additionally, messages from teachers on social media indicated that they had resigned from the Kleuter Akademie. They cited dissatisfaction with the working conditions and reported that many issues, including non-compliance with Department of Education regulations, were present. At times, there were situations where there was no porridge available to feed the children in the mornings. The teachers and caretakers took it upon themselves to use their own money to ensure that the children received food. There were also statements that, at times, there was no electricity available at the school premises because of unpaid electricity bills.
SSS received a sworn statement via email from the individual who administered the medicine to the children, and SSS is in possession of video footage confirming this. She claimed under oath that she was employed by Mrs. Ria Niemand at Kleuter Akademie.
She further stated that Mrs. Niemand was aware that she lacked the necessary training to work in her position. Additionally, the individual explained that she had been appointed as a caretaker owing to the frequent absenteeism of teachers at Kleuter Akademie. She attributed the absenteeism to the teachers not receiving their salaries on time or, in some cases, not receiving them at all.
On 5 February 2025, Mrs. Niemand appointed her as a caretaker to look after the baby class at Kleuter Akademie owing to a shortage of teachers. Mrs. Niemand’s domestic worker, who worked at her private home, assisted her from 11 o'clock in the morning because she was unable to manage the stairs on her own. During this time, an incident occurred where a little girl was injured after an altercation with an older child.
The individual immediately reported the incident to Mrs. Niemand, who later arrived and instructed her to remain silent about the true cause of the injury. Mrs. Niemand directed her to tell the parents, when they picked the child up later that afternoon, that the little girl had simply fallen and sustained the injuries. The individual felt it was the right thing to do to notify the parents of the true cause of the injury,
as the child continued crying after the injury.
According to her statement, the working conditions at the school had been inappropriate for some time.
She, along with other teachers, felt afraid to confront Mrs. Niemand about these issues after witnessing how she treated staff who spoke out.
She described instances where Mrs. Niemand verbally abused teachers who challenged practices they believed were wrong.
She further stated that Mrs. Niemand often instructed her to place babies and toddlers together in the same class, despite the absence of qualified teachers; only assistants were present. No training or development opportunities were ever provided by Mrs. Niemand to improve the knowledge or skills of the assistant staff.
SSS also obtained a copy of the Kleuter Akademie contract that parents were required to sign upon registering their children.
Clause 4.2 of the contract clearly states that medication may only be administered to a child if the parents provide explicit written instructions. Furthermore, any medication given must be recorded in the child’s class register. Despite this policy, Mrs. Niemand violated her own school’s contract by failing to ensure that the administration of medication on a particular day was recorded correctly.
This incident, which is documented in video footage currently in SSS' possession, formed the basis of the original investigation.
In addition, several parents informed SSS that Mrs. Niemand also runs an afternoon study group at her private residence.
SSS believes this may be a contributing factor to her lack of attention and oversight at Kleuter Akademie.
