On 8 July 2025, Mr. Louis Liebenberg appeared before the Bronkhorstspruit Magistrate Court along with his wife,
Mrs. Dezzi Liebenberg, and 7 other co-accused who face 59 charges of Fraud, Theft, Money Laundering, and Racketeering.
It was observed that Mr. and Mrs. Liebenberg appeared emotional,
and it can be assumed that life in prison is taking its toll on the couple.
PRISON IS NO JOKE:
When your comfort is stripped away, and a simple thing like making yourself a cup of coffee is no longer an option, the reality of prison sinks in.
The cells are uncomfortable and dirty; the mattresses are covered in fleas and personal hygiene is nonexistent.
You have no choice with whom you share a cell, and your social status means absolutely nothing in prison; in fact, if anything, it counts against you.
These are just some of the realities that the suspects have to face while detained.
“Give back my Devices”
Mr. Liebenberg addressed the court directly when he asked to have the electronic devices, which were confiscated during his arrest, returned to him to allow him to prepare for his bail application.
Mr. Liebenberg claimed that the state took possession of 4 mobile phones, while the state argued that they only took possession of 1 mobile phone during the arrest of Mr. Liebenberg.
The state argued that all electronic devices are considered evidence and therefore agreed to provide Mr. Liebenberg with the data stored on the devices, rather than the actual devices.
Mr. Liebenberg claimed that the information on his mobile phone would assist him to prepare for his bail application, at which he plans to call at least 50 witnesses.
“Are they mandated by myself, or by the state”
Mr. Liebenberg further requested from the court to allow him to contact the investigating officer directly, the court cautioned him that those conversations would not be privileged, and Mr. Liebenberg acknowledged that fact and thanked the court.
While making this request to the court, Mr. Liebenberg stated that he was visited in prison by different individuals who said that they were “moving diamonds and gold from one place to another”, and Mr. Liebenberg claimed that this confused him because he was unsure whether these individuals were acting on his orders, or on the state’s orders.
CASE POSTPONED:
Mr. Liebenberg’s legal representative asked the court to avoid further delays by the state for the purpose of further investigation.
He stated that Mr. Liebenberg has been incarcerated for more than a year, and that further delays would be unfair.
The state argued that Mr. Liebenberg was arrested in October 2024, which does not align with the claim that Mr. Liebenberg has been incarcerated for more than a year.
The case against Mr. and Mrs. Liebenberg and their 7 co-accused was postponed until 25 November 2025.
The court has been reserved on 5, 6, and 7 August 2025 for the bail application of Mr. Liebenberg to be heard.
WARNING TO THE PUBLIC:
Owing to the media attention this case is receiving, several WhatsApp groups and Facebook pages have been formed in which the public engage in acts of defamation and intimidation against each other, and against possible witnesses and/or authority figures involved in this case.
Despite several warnings by Mr. Bolhuis, these individuals continue with their irresponsible social media actions.
The situation is being monitored by the Specialised Security Services Cybercrimes Unit, as well as the authorities. Individuals who engage in illegal activities online will be identified and prosecuted.
